Stephen Hill, corporate director of PT Britoil Offshore Indonesia, said the Model 999 is a perfect fit for the company and also for the application. “The Model 999 was specified because we knew the size and tonnage of the loads that we have to lift when building a ship,” he said. “This model matched the capacity we needed and Manitowoc is a brand we know well and have good experience with.” The heaviest loads the cranes lift are the ‘blocks’. The middleblock section can weigh up to 335 t, while the stern block can weigh up to 270 t. Depending on the load and the engineering requirements, between two and four cranes are used to complete these lifts. Hill said that PT Britoil Offshore Indonesia keeps the fleet of four Manitowocs busy. “Besides lifting the blocks to be turned over after fabrication, the cranes also move around the yard to lift equipment and other parts into the ship,” he said. “There are always a lot of tasks waiting for the four crawler cranes, so they are never idle.” The Manitowoc Model 999 is a 250 t capacity crawler crane and one of the most popular crawler cranes in the global market. It is characterized by not only its capacity, but its fast, efficient self-assembly and disassembly. It comes with a heavy lift boom – 88.4 m– as well as a long-reach boom of 103.6 m. The complete crane, with maximum boom, fixed jib and counterweight can ship on 12 trucks. Power comes from a 291 kW engine. PT Britoil Offshore Indonesia is currently building six vessels at its Batam shipyard. One is the Britoil 80, an 8,000 hp anchor handling tugboat. The boat measures 56 m x 16 m x 7.5 m and fabrication started in June 2008. Ships from this facility are used primarily in the offshore oil and gas industry in places like the Middle East, India and Taiwan.
